Why Data Centres Need Online UPS

Server rooms and data centres have zero tolerance for power interruption. A power failure lasting even 20 milliseconds can crash servers, corrupt databases, and trigger hardware failures costing lakhs in recovery time.

Online double conversion UPS is the only UPS topology that provides true zero-transfer-time protection. Unlike offline or line-interactive UPS, online UPS continuously powers your load through its inverter — the mains supply feeds a rectifier which charges batteries and powers the inverter simultaneously. If mains fails, there is literally no switchover event because the load was already on the inverter.

Online UPS also regenerates clean, regulated power output regardless of what the mains supply delivers — protecting against voltage sags, swells, harmonics, frequency variations, and complete outages in a single unit.

Automatic Transfer Switches & Bypass Panels

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) monitors two power sources — typically mains utility and diesel generator — and automatically transfers the load to whichever source is available. In a typical data centre setup, the ATS sits between the generator and the UPS input, ensuring seamless switchover when mains fails and the generator starts.

Transfer time for a good quality ATS is under 100 ms, which is within the ride-through time of most online UPS systems — meaning your servers experience zero interruption even during a generator transfer event.

Maintenance bypass panels are equally critical — they allow you to take a UPS offline for scheduled maintenance while the load continues to run on raw mains power, with no shutdown required.
