A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is an electrical device that provides instant backup power when mains electricity fails or fluctuates below safe operating levels. Inside, it contains a battery pack, a charger, and an inverter. When connected to mains power, the UPS continuously charges its batteries while powering your equipment (online UPS) or passes mains power through while keeping batteries charged (offline UPS). When mains power fails, the inverter instantly converts battery DC power to AC power, keeping your equipment running without interruption.
Online (Double Conversion) UPS: Continuously powers connected equipment through its inverter. Mains power → Rectifier → Battery + Inverter → Output. This means zero transfer time and complete isolation from mains power quality issues. Best for servers, data centres, medical equipment, and any critical load that cannot tolerate even a millisecond of power interruption.
Line-Interactive UPS: Normally passes mains power through (with automatic voltage regulation), only switching to battery when voltage goes out of acceptable range. Transfer time is typically 2–4 ms. Good balance of protection and cost for networking equipment and workstations.
Offline (Standby) UPS: Passes mains power through directly. Only switches to inverter when mains fails completely. Transfer time 5–15 ms. Lowest cost option, suitable for personal computers, home use, and low-criticality equipment.
kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is the unit used to rate UPS capacity. It represents the apparent power — the total power the UPS can supply. The actual real power (kW) delivered depends on the power factor of your load. Most modern equipment has a power factor of 0.7–0.9. A 10 kVA UPS with 0.8 power factor delivers 8 kW of real power. When sizing a UPS, calculate your load in watts, then divide by the power factor to get the required kVA.
Single-phase UPS uses a single alternating current (230V) and is suitable for offices, small server rooms, and equipment rated up to about 20 kVA. It's the most common UPS type for commercial use.
Three-phase UPS uses three-phase power (415V in India) and is designed for large data centres, industrial facilities, hospitals, and any application requiring high power capacity (typically 10 kVA to 800 kVA+). Three-phase systems distribute load more evenly and are more efficient at high power levels.
Step 1: List all equipment to be protected and their wattage (found on the nameplate or in specs).
Step 2: Add up total watts.
Step 3: Divide by 0.7 (power factor) to get required VA. Example: 10 workstations at 200W each = 2,000W ÷ 0.7 = 2,857 VA → choose a 3 kVA UPS.
Step 4: Add a 20–25% buffer for growth and inefficiency: 3 kVA × 1.25 = 3.75 kVA → choose a 4 kVA or 5 kVA UPS.

Backup time depends on the battery capacity (Ah × V = Wh) and the load. Most standard UPS units are designed for 10–30 minutes at full load — enough to save work and shut down safely. For longer runtimes (1–4+ hours), you need additional external battery packs. When quoting, tell us the load (kVA/kW) and the required backup duration, and we'll size the battery bank accordingly.

SMF (Sealed Maintenance Free) / VRLA batteries: 3–5 years under normal conditions (ambient temperature below 25°C). Every 10°C rise in temperature above 25°C roughly halves battery life — rooms above 35°C can shorten life to under 2 years.
Lithium-Ion batteries: 8–10 years, with 2,000–5,000 charge cycles. They're more expensive upfront but cost-effective long-term and far less sensitive to temperature.
Signs your batteries need replacement: shorter runtime, UPS alarming "low battery" more quickly, or battery test failures on our test equipment.
Both are types of valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) — often sold as SMF — uses a fibreglass mat to hold the electrolyte, delivers high discharge rates, and is the most common type for UPS applications. Gel batteries use a gel electrolyte, tolerate heat slightly better, and are better for deep-cycle applications like solar. For standard UPS use, AGM/SMF batteries are the right choice and are what most major brands (Exide, Quanta, Amara Raja) supply.
It depends on the UPS model. Some modern UPS systems (especially from Eaton and Vertiv) are designed to accept lithium-ion battery modules as a drop-in upgrade. Older or basic UPS units may not be compatible. Our engineers can assess your existing UPS and advise whether a lithium upgrade is feasible, the cost savings over the battery life, and whether a full UPS replacement would be more economical.
A UPS AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) is a paid service agreement where we commit to maintaining your UPS system throughout the year. Typically includes: quarterly preventive maintenance visits, battery load tests, firmware updates, cleaning, emergency breakdown support with defined response times, and a service report after each visit. An AMC prevents unexpected failures, extends equipment life, and gives you predictable service costs.
For most business UPS systems, quarterly preventive maintenance is recommended — four visits per year. Critical systems (data centres, hospitals) should be serviced bi-monthly or monthly. At minimum, every UPS should have an annual service. Battery testing should be done at every visit. Our AMC plans cover all this in a single annual fee.
